The 28th Amendment refers to different proposals to amend the U.S. Constitution. Here are some of the proposals:
-
Governor Newsoms proposed 28th Amendment: This amendment aims to enshrine common sense gun safety measures into the Constitution, such as raising the federal minimum age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21, mandating universal background checks, instituting a reasonable waiting period for all gun purchases, and barring civilian purchase of assault rifles. Passage of this amendment would require a convention to propose amendments to the United States Constitution, also known as an Article V Convention or amendatory convention.
-
The For Our Freedom Amendment: This proposed amendment aims to reduce the corrupting influence of big money in politics. It seeks to ensure an equal voice for every American and end the escalating influence of wealthy donors over the political system. This amendment is rapidly gaining momentum in states across the country, thanks to cross-partisan support, grassroots volunteer action, and collaborative partnerships.
-
The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA): This amendment would enshrine gender equality as a constitutional right. Its main clause states: “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” In 2020, Virginia became the 38th and final state needed to fulfill the ratification requirement. However, due to the arbitrary time limit for ratification, the ERA has not yet been finalized as an amendment by the Archivist. A joint resolution has been introduced to direct the Archivist of the United States to affirm the ERA as the 28th Amendment of the United States Constitution.
It is important to note that none of these proposals have been ratified as the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution yet.
