The Sixth Commandment is "Thou shalt not murder". It is important to note that this commandment refers to murder, not to all killing. Killing is sometimes necessary for nations to defend themselves from invasion, but murder is killing someone who doesn’t deserve to die. The commandment deals with inward realities as well, in this case, those inner attitudes that, if left unchecked, will result in murder. Jesus Christ expounded on the Sixth Commandment to emphasize its spiritual intent. He told us not to become angry without a cause or to allow anger to cause us to do violence or even abuse another person verbally. The Ninth Commandment, "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors wife," is also related to the Sixth Commandment as it forbids all wilful desires and sensuous thoughts of whatever is forbidden by the Sixth.
