If a military draft were to be reinstated in the United States, the Selective Service System would conduct a National Draft Lottery to determine the order in which young men would be drafted. The first men drafted would be those turning age 20 during the calendar year of the lottery. For example, if a draft were held in 2023, those men born in 2003 would be considered first. Men turning 21 in the year of the draft would be second priority, men turning 22 would be third, and so on until a man turns 26, at which time he is over the age of liability. Therefore, the age for the draft would be between 20 and 26 years old. It is important to note that the military draft has not been in effect since 1973, and currently, almost all male U.S. citizens and immigrants, ages 18 through 25, are required to register with the Selective Service System.
