The Atlantic Loop is a proposed series of high-capacity transmission lines that would connect Hydro-Québec facilities with New Brunswick, together with a series of interprovincial transmission lines that would provide clean electricity between Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. The project would deliver hydroelectricity from Quebec and Labrador into Maritime provinces that currently rely mostly on fossil fuels for electricity. The Atlantic Loop was intended to build new electricity links to share hydro power from Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador. The project is expected to reduce project costs, provide value to customers in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and absorb risk. The federal government has proposed to invest $4.5 billion to advance the Atlantic Loop, which represents two-thirds of the overall capital cost. However, Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston has expressed concerns about the cost of the project and has suggested that the proposal requires Nova Scotia ratepayers to pay back the $4.5 billion. The project is expected to be completed by 2030.
