The Australian Constitution is the set of rules by which Australia is governed. It was established on January 1, 1901, following the passing of the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act by the United Kingdom Parliament. The Constitution establishes the form of the federal government, known as the Commonwealth, and sets out the basis for relations between the Commonwealth and the states. It describes the composition, role, and powers of the Australian Parliament, how Parliament works, and what powers it has. The Constitution also outlines how the federal and state Parliaments share power, and the roles of the executive government and the High Court of Australia. The Constitution is divided into 8 chapters and 128 sections. It is a written constitution that sets down the political structure of Australia as a federation under a constitutional monarchy and outlines the structure and powers of the Australian Governments three constituent parts: the executive, legislature, and judiciary. The Constitution does not cover all aspects of the governing of Australia, and the Prime Minister and the Cabinet are not mentioned in the Constitution.
