The Autobahn is the federal controlled-access highway system in Germany, also known as the Bundesautobahn (abbreviated BAB) . The literal meaning of the word Bundesautobahn is Federal Auto Track. The Autobahn is famous worldwide for being a highway without speed limits, although this is not entirely true as there are some speed limits in certain areas. The Autobahn is an extensive network of limited-access freeways that can usually provide a driver with a speedy route from city to city. The current Autobahn numbering system in use in Germany was introduced in 1974. All Autobahns are named by using the capital letter A, which simply stands for "Autobahn" followed by a blank and a number (for example A 8) . The main Autobahns going all across Germany have a single-digit number, while shorter Autobahns that are of regional importance have a double-digit number. The Autobahn is a well-designed network of roads and flawlessly maintained to be one of the smoothest in the world, making it a pleasure to drive. The German government recommends a maximum speed of 130 kph, so about 80 mph per hour on Autobahns, but drivers are free to go as fast as they want in derestricted stretches.
