The capital of Thailand is Bangkok, officially known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon and colloquially as Krung Thep. Bangkok is the most populous city in Thailand, with an estimated population of 10.539 million as of 2020. It is located on the delta of the Chao Phraya River, about 25 miles (40 km) from the Gulf of Thailand. As the capital of Thailand, Bangkok is the seat of all branches of the national government, and most government ministries have headquarters and offices in the city. The Grand Palace and Dusit Palace are respectively the official and de facto residence of the king.
