Lord Krishna was born into the Yadava clan, the son of Vasudeva and Devaki, who was the sister of Kamsa, the wicked king of Mathura. The Yadavas are a sub-clan of Sona vamsa, which is a Kshatriya sub-clan. Therefore, there is some debate about whether Lord Krishna was born into the Kshatriya caste or the Yadava caste. However, it is generally accepted that Lord Krishna was born a Kshatriya. It is important to note that Lord Krishnas story is an amalgamation of many disparate elements, and his saga is an amalgamation of many disparate elements in one harmonious and coherent whole. The caste system as we know it today did not exist during Lord Krishnas time, and the emphasis was on guna (aptitude) and karma (function) and not on jaati (birth) .
