The official currency in Tunisia is the Tunisian dinar, which is abbreviated as DT or TND. It is subdivided into 1,000 milim or millimes. The dinar was introduced in Tunisia in 1958, replacing the franc, and it started to be used in 1960. Currently, there are coins of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 500 millimes and 1, 5 and 10 dinars in circulation, as well as banknotes of 5, 10, 20 and 50 dinars. The exchange rate of the dinar to the US dollar and other currencies fluctuates, and it is fixed by the government. It is illegal to import or export dinars, as it is a closed currency, but tourists can exchange foreign currency for dinars at banks, bureaux de change, hotels, and post offices in Tunisia. ATMs are also widely available in the country.
