According to the Texas Administrative Code, Title 37, Part 1, Rule 21.3, the darkest legal tint in Texas for sedans, SUVs, and vans is 25% VLT (visible light transmission) for the front side windows and windshield. The windshield can have a tint of 25% VLT or more above the manufacturers AS-1 line or top 5 inches, with less than 25% reflection. The back side windows and rear windows can have any VLT percentage for vehicles with outside mirrors on each side of the vehicle, but for vehicles without outside mirrors, the VLT must be 25%. Red, blue, and amber colors are not allowed. However, if a motorist has a medical condition that requires a darker tint, they may be exempted from the law.
