The distance of a marathon race is 42.195 kilometers or 26 miles and 385 yards. The modern 42.195 km (26.219 mi) standard distance for the marathon was set by the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) in May 1921 directly from the length used at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. The marathon can be completed by running or with a run/walk strategy, and there are also wheelchair divisions.
