The DMV area, also known as the Washington metropolitan area, is the metropolitan area centered around Washington, D.C., the federal capital of the United States. The term DMV stands for "District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia" and is a colloquial name for the region. The metropolitan area includes all of Washington, D.C. and parts of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. The National Capital Region portion of the Washington metropolitan area is also colloquially known by the abbreviation "DMV".

The exact boundaries of the DMV area are not well-defined and can vary depending on who you ask. According to a survey conducted by The MoCo Show, almost everyone familiar with the term considered all of D.C. as being in the DMV, and most felt that the areas immediately surrounding D.C. are part of the DMV. Some think the DMV expands to include the entirety of the counties surrounding D.C., plus some of the counties beyond that.

The DMV area is home to broad, diverse communities, and is more than just the seat of the national government. The term DMV was coined by hip-hop artists in the early 2000s and has since been adopted by the wider community.
