It is billed as the "worlds richest race on turf" with twelve of the fastest horses competing for a prize money of $20,000,000. The race is held under weight-for-age conditions, which means that weights are allocated according to age rather than on form, as in handicaps like the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. The Everest is a unique race in that it is a slot race, which means that slot-holders pay for a horse to be included in the race. Typically, investors pay $600,000 in advance and then find a horse to fill the slot. The Everest is only a sprint of 1200 meters, and horses tend to win by small margins as the last two Everest races have been won by 1.3L and 0.75L. The inaugural The Everest was run in 2017 and won by Redzel, who also won the second version of The Everest in similar circumstances. In 2019, Yes Yes Yes won the race, and in 2020, Classique Legend was victorious as the betting favorite.
