The FEMA alert refers to the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) that are used to warn the public about emergencies, particularly those that pose a threat to life or property. The EAS is a national public warning system that requires radio and TV broadcasters, cable TV, wireless cable, and satellite operators to provide the President with the capability to address the American people within 10 minutes during a national emergency. The WEA is a system that sends short emergency messages to authorized federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial public alerting authorities, which can then be sent to mobile devices when people may be in harms way. The purpose of the FEMA alert is to ensure that the systems continue to be effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those that pose a threat to life or property. FEMA, in partnership with the Federal Communications Commission and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is responsible for implementing, maintaining, and operating the EAS at the federal level. FEMAs Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) is a centralized internet-based system administered by FEMA that enables authorities to send authenticated emergency messages to the public through multiple communications networks. The FEMA alert is tested regularly to evaluate the readiness of the system and our national alerting capability in the absence of internet connectivity.
