The first computer virus in the Philippines is known as the "ILOVEYOU" virus, also referred to as the "Love Bug" or "Loveletter" virus. It was detected on May 4, 2000, and caused significant damage, infecting millions of computer systems worldwide and causing losses of up to $5.5 billion. The virus spread via email with the subject ILOVE YOU and followed by the attachment Love-Letter-For-You.TXT.vbs. When the user opened the link, the virus automatically attacked JPEG, MP3, and other data receiving formats. Messages were also sent directly to all Microsoft Outlook recipient contacts. All information about e-mail taken from the computers address book, such as usernames and passwords, was sent to the address of the author of the virus.
