The full form of IRS is Internal Revenue Service. It is a federal agency of the United States government that is responsible for enforcing and administering federal tax laws, processing tax returns, performing audits, and offering assistance for American taxpayers. The IRS was created by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862 to manage the nation’s first federal income tax, which was authorized to fund the Civil War. The agency also handles gift, excise, and estate taxes. The IRS operates on a budget that is approved by Congress and is divided into four different accounts: Taxpayer Services, Enforcement, Operations Support, and Business Systems Modernization. The money allotted to each account cannot be reallocated to other sections. The IRS is headed up by a commissioner, and Douglas ODonnell was appointed as the acting commissioner on Nov. 12, 2022.
