The NBA in-season tournament is a new annual competition for all 30 teams that will debut in the 2023-24 season. The tournament was officially announced on July 8, 2023, and will have a format similar to European soccer tournaments and the WNBA Commissioners Cup. The tournament will consist of two stages: Group Play and Knockout Rounds. All 67 games across both stages of the In-Season Tournament will count toward the regular-season standings except the Championship. The tournament will begin on November 3 and end with the Championship on December 9. The semifinals and championship will take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The winner of the tournament will receive the NBA Cup, and each player on the winning team will receive $500,000. The tournament will provide players and teams with another competition to win, engage fans in a new way, and drive additional interest in the early portion of the regular-season schedule. The NBA has been trying to come up with ways of making the entirety of the marathon 82-game season more relevant to viewers, attempting to draw in the more casual fans who perhaps won’t tune in until after Christmas, or even the playoffs.
