According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in the 2021 Census of Population and Housing, 61,000 people identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander in the Northern Territory. The Aboriginal population was estimated at 76,736, which represents about 30% of the Territorys population, according to the 2021 Census. In the 2016 Census, there were 58,246 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in the Northern Territory, representing 25.5% of the population. The Northern Territorys population is 247,491, with nearly 1 in 3 Territorians being Aboriginal people and more than 1 in 5 living outside Greater Darwin. Estimates of pre-European population on the continent range from 250,000 to 1,000,000, of which perhaps one-sixth lived in the Northern Territory.
