The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a long-standing military and political conflict in the Levant that dates back to the end of the nineteenth century. It is rooted in a century-long territorial dispute over the Holy Land, a Middle Eastern region with great religious and historical significance to Christians, Jews, and Muslims. The conflict includes disputes over borders, Jerusalem, security, and Palestinian refugees. The conflict has resulted in casualties on both sides, including a large number of civilian fatalities. The conflict has been marked by multistate wars, armed uprisings (intifadas), and terrorist acts. The conflict has been one of the worlds most intractable, and the outlook for Israeli-Palestinian negotiations is bleak.
