The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a long-running and complex conflict between two self-determination movements, the Jewish Zionist project and the Palestinian nationalist project, that lay claim to the same territory. The conflict has its roots in a colonial act carried out more than a century ago, and it has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced many millions of people. The conflict pits Israeli demands for security in what it has long regarded as a hostile region against Palestinian aspirations for a state of their own. The conflict has been marked by wars, violence, and mutual distrust, and it generates a wide variety of views and opinions within Israeli and Palestinian society. Some of the main issues that Israel and the Palestinians cannot agree on include the status of Palestinian refugees, the fate of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, the sharing of Jerusalem, and the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. Despite numerous attempts to resolve the conflict, a deep-set and growing distrust between the participants, unilateral strategies, and the rhetoric of hardline political factions have fostered mutual embitterment and hostility and a loss of faith in the peace process.
