A jump seat is an auxiliary seat for individuals who are not normal passengers and are not operating the aircraft. In airplanes, jump seats are provided for individuals who are not operating the aircraft, such as trainee pilots, off-duty crew members in transition to another airport, government officials, or airline staff. There are two types of jump seats: cockpit jump seats and main cabin jump seats. The cockpit jump seat is located in the aircrafts cockpit, usually behind the operating pilots, and is only allowed for extra pilots, airline staff, or government observers. The main cabin jump seat is located at the front of the main cabin before the passenger seats and is used by cabin crew, especially during takeoff and landing. These jump seats are normally located near emergency exits so that flight attendants can quickly open the exit door for an emergency evacuation. Jump seats are also used by non-revenue passengers and jump seaters when no passenger seats are available in the cabin. The captain makes the final decision on who can use the jump seat. When jump seating, it is important to follow proper etiquette, such as asking permission, dressing appropriately, and limiting carry-on bags.
