The official and national language of Cambodia is Khmer. Khmer is an Austroasiatic language spoken by the Khmer people and has been influenced considerably by Sanskrit and Pali, especially in the royal and religious registers, through Hinduism and Buddhism. According to the 2013 Census of Cambodia, Khmer is the most widely spoken language in the country, with French and English being spoken as second languages by many older Cambodians and younger generations, respectively. Khmer is spoken by some 13 million people in Cambodia, where it is the official language, and by another 2.6 million people in other parts of Southeast Asia.
