According to Texas law, the darkest legal tint for cars is 25% VLT (visible light transmission) on the front side windows, and any VLT % is allowed on the back side and rear windows for vehicles with outside mirrors on each side of the vehicle. For vehicles without outside mirrors, the darkest legal tint is 25% VLT. The windshield must allow at least 25% VLT above the manufacturers AS-1 line or top 5 inches, with less than 25% reflection. Red, amber, and blue tints are not allowed. The Texas Department of Public Safety enforces laws that govern the placement and darkness of tinting films, and state-approved vehicle safety inspections require that the vehicle’s glass be inspected to assure that it meets certain visible light transmission levels in order to pass inspection. Medical exemptions are allowed for special tint, but motorists must present a signed medical exemption statement when the vehicle is presented for annual inspection and keep the signed medical exemption statement in the vehicle and present it to an officer in case of a traffic stop.
