The maximum Handicap Index for all golfers is 54.0, regardless of gender. This means that the highest handicap a golfer can have is 54. However, the handicap a player gets at a course does not have to equal the Handicap Index. Instead, a calculation based upon the Handicap Index and the difficulty of the course gives a player their Course Handicap. The Committee in charge of a competition may implement a lower maximum limit through a term of the competition, and a Committee may also set a maximum Course Handicap™/Playing Handicap™ to be used for the competition. Additionally, the Equitable Stroke Control system sets a maximum score per hole that a player can submit for handicap purposes, which is the Net Double Bogey, defined as Par + 2 + any handicap strokes the player receives.
