As of January 1, 2023, the national minimum wage in Ireland is €11.30 per hour. However, the Irish government has approved a 12.4% increase in the national minimum wage for 2024, which will take effect on January 1, 2024, bringing the minimum wage to €12.70 per hour. This increase was recommended by the Low Pay Commission in July 2023. The minimum wage applies to most employees working under a contract of employment, including part-time, casual, and temporary workers. Some people, such as those aged under 20, may receive sub-minimum rates. Employers must pay at least the minimum wage, and employees cannot agree to be paid less than the minimum wage or to do unpaid work, unless they are employed by a close family relative or are on a recognized apprenticeship.
