The Ethiopian Space Science Society (ESSS) is a non-profit organization that was established in 2004 with 47 founding members. The society is made up of professionals and individuals interested in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Science, Technology, and related fields. The mission of the ESSS is to make Ethiopia a scientific society and enable the country to reap the benefits accruing from space science and technology. To achieve this mission, the ESSS has several objectives, including:
- Foster the development of competent professionals in the field of space science and technology, from the lowest technician to the technologist and scientist.
- Encourage educational and research activities in the field of space science and technology and establish an award-giving ceremony whereby recognition is accorded to outstanding individuals and institutions.
- Encourage the adoption and implementation of a policy and strategy concerning space science and related technology.
- Raise funds and search for other material and support from domestic and foreign donors to further the objectives of the society.
- Encourage space science tourism in Ethiopia.
- Develop the human resource of the field, especially in the first priority area, sufficiently.
- Build the necessary institutions of training and research of the field.
- Develop a strong link between the public and private sector of the field in all aspects to work together to achieve the vision and mission.
Since its establishment, the ESSS has achieved significant growth and accomplishments. They have pioneered the establishment of the first-ever observatory in East Africa and have played a crucial role in initiating MSC and PhD level education in space and astronomy fields at the Entoto Observatory & Research Center and public universities. The society has also been instrumental in supporting the development of the national space policy and played a crucial role in successfully launching two Ethiopian satellites.
