The most common cancer types in the United States, excluding nonmelanoma skin cancers, are breast, lung and bronchus, prostate, and colorectal cancers, which account for almost 50% of all new cancer cases. According to the National Cancer Institute, to qualify as a common cancer, the estimated annual incidence for 2023 had to be 40,000 cases or more. Breast cancer is the most common cancer on the list, with 300,590 new cases expected in the United States in 2023. The next most common cancers are prostate cancer and lung cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the most common cancers in 2020 (in terms of new cases of cancer) were breast, lung, colon and rectum, and prostate cancers. The American Cancer Society also reported that breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women in the United States, and it is the second leading cause of death from cancer among women. Therefore, breast cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, followed by lung and bronchus, prostate, and colorectal cancers.
