Land is a 2021 psychological drama film directed by Robin Wright in her feature directorial debut, from a screenplay by Jesse Chatham and Erin Dignam). The film centers around Edee Holzer (Robin Wright), a cosmopolitan lawyer consumed by grief. After enduring a personal tragedy, Edee feels her only option is to retreat to the magnificent, but unforgiving, wilds of the Rockies. Edee is isolated emotionally by a traumatic event, and she is also physically isolated in the wilderness. The film explores themes of grief, trauma, and isolation, and how connection is what matters.

After a local hunter named Miguel (Demián Bichir) brings her back from the brink of death, Edee must find a way to live again. Miguel becomes an unexpected ally and even teacher, promising not to tell Edee anything of the outside world, maintaining her self-isolation, and he doesn’t say much. He’s going to give her the tools to survive, and then be gone. The film works best as a performance piece for two excellent actors. Wright nails every aspect of this character, particularly the way she internalizes her grief and uses that empty pain to push herself to survive. Bichir matches her with a very different performance that’s no less powerful.

The film received generally positive reviews from critics). It is a quiet character study about grief, trauma, and isolation, and explores themes of resilience and connection in the face of seemingly insurmountable loneliness.
