The Murdaugh murders refer to the killing of Maggie Murdaugh, 52, and her son Paul, 22, on June 7, 2021, at their hunting lodge estate in rural Colleton County, South Carolina. The Murdaugh family had established a legal dynasty in the states Lowcountry region, and the killings began to be known as the Murdaugh murders. The case remained a mystery for over a year until Alex Murdaugh, the husband of Maggie and father of Paul, was indicted in July 2022 with two counts of murder and two weapons charges. During his murder trial, which began in January 2023, Murdaugh was found guilty of killing his wife and son. Prosecutors argued that Murdaugh killed his family to distract from and delay investigations into his alleged financial crimes, which included stealing millions of dollars from his clients and his law firm. Murdaugh has adamantly denied killing his family, and his lawyers are challenging his conviction. The case has also spawned several more investigations into three previous deaths in proximity to the family. Murdaugh has also been charged with concocting a bizarre scheme to stage his own suicide to look like a murder after being pushed out of his law firm.
