The name of the first satellite launched by ISRO was Aryabhata). It was named after the famous Indian astronomer and mathematician of the 5th century CE, Aryabhata. The satellite was completely designed and fabricated in India and launched by a Soviet Kosmos-3M rocket from Kapustin Yar on April 19, 1975). It was an experimental satellite with a launch mass of 360 kg and a mission life of nearly seventeen years). The satellite was instrumented to explore conditions in Earths ionosphere, measure neutrons and gamma rays from the Sun, and perform investigations in X-ray astronomy. However, a power failure halted experiments after four days and 60 orbits, and all signals from the spacecraft were lost after five days of operation).
