The process where a white blood cell engulfs a pathogen is called phagocytosis. In phagocytosis, the white blood cell, often a type of phagocyte such as a macrophage or neutrophil, surrounds and encloses the pathogen within a membrane-bound vesicle called a phagosome. This phagosome then typically fuses with a lysosome to form a phagolysosome, where the pathogen is killed and digested by enzymes.
