The name of the study of the longest ongoing students of a biracial, semirural community in the South is the Bogalusa Heart Study. It is a long-term population study that addresses the problem of capacity building in minority health research. The study began as an observation of children and eventually evolved into observations of young adults. Bogalusa, LA, is a biracial (black/white) rural community 70 miles north of New Orleans, comparable to many other communities in southeastern United States. The study is focused on understanding the impact of vascular and cardiovascular disease risk factors in early life and young adulthood in a biracial population. The Bogalusa Heart Study is the only study that collected data on the same individuals from childhood to adulthood.
