Paraprofessionals, also known as paraeducators or teachers aides, are school employees who work under the supervision of licensed teachers to provide additional support to students who require extra help, including students with disabilities, limited English proficiency, or behavioral issues. They can work with students one-on-one or in small groups to reinforce learning and provide extra support during or after a teachers lesson. Paraprofessionals can also help with other tasks such as grading papers, preparing materials for lessons, supervising students during lunch or recess, or providing guidance to students who need extra help.

The collaboration between classroom teachers and paraprofessionals is essential for creating a positive learning environment in which all students can thrive. Paraprofessionals can provide specialized attention allowing teachers to focus more on large-group instruction while still being available when needed by individual students. Paraprofessionals must have knowledge and skills to be good at working with students. They don’t have the same training and certification as teachers, but they must meet certain requirements, which vary from state to state and even among school districts. Under ESSA, paraprofessionals provide teaching support and must have a high school diploma (or its equivalent) and also meet one of these requirements: finished two years of study at a college or technical school, hold at least an associate’s degree, or be able to show, through a formal state or local academic assessment, that they know about and can assist in reading, writing, and math instruction.

Paraprofessionals play important roles in schools and help make classrooms more inclusive. They are an important part of the school’s staff and play an essential role in helping create a safe learning environment for all students.
