On October 4th, 2023, a national test will be conducted of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) in the United States. The test is aimed at ensuring that the systems continue to be effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level. The test will take place at approximately 2:20 p.m. Eastern Time, and all consumer phones will receive an alarm that reads "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed". The message will also be sent to radios and televisions as part of the seventh nationwide EAS test. The test will last for approximately 30 minutes, and the alert tone is generally only played when the alert is initially received by the phone and will not repeat. Phones with the main menu set to Spanish will display a message that says "ESTA ES UNA PRUEBA del Sistema Nacional de Alerta de Emergencia. No se necesita acción". The purpose of the test is to ensure that the systems continue to be effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level.
