English is the official language of the United States following an executive order issued in March 2025 by President Donald Trump

. Despite this order, no legislation has been passed by the U.S. Congress to make English the official language

. Prior to the executive order, English was the de facto national language, with the majority of the U.S. population (78%) speaking only English at home as of 2023

. Even though English is the official language, 32 states and five U.S. territories have also adopted additional official languages

. The executive order does not require agencies to alter or eliminate existing language assistance programs
