The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a long-standing military and political conflict in the Levant that has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced many millions of people. The conflict has its roots in a colonial act carried out more than a century ago, with the birth of major nationalist movements among the Jews and among the Arabs, both geared towards attaining sovereignty for their people in the Middle East. The conflict primarily centers around the territory, with Israel and Palestine both claiming the same land. The main issues that the two sides cannot agree on include the status of Jerusalem, the right of return for Palestinian refugees, and whether Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank should stay or be removed. The conflict has been marked by several wars and military confrontations, including the first Arab-Israeli War in 1948, the Six-Day War in 1967, and the Gaza War in 2014. The most recent conflict broke out in early October 2023 between Israel and Hamas, the militant Islamist group that has controlled Gaza since 2006.
