The 2021 census reported a population of 29,164,578, with a growth rate of 0.92% per year. The population has been steadily rising in recent decades, with almost a threefold increase from nine million in 1950 to 26.5 million in 2011. The average family size declined from 5.44 to 4.9 from 2001 to 2011. The population of Nepal is expected to surpass 30 million people in 2022 and will reach its peak population of 35.32 million by 2049. After 2050, the population is expected to shrink, falling back down to 24.04 million people by the end of the century.
