According to the most recent census conducted by the National Records of Scotland in March 2022, the population of Scotland was estimated to be 5,436,600, which is the highest ever recorded. The population grew by 141,200 (2.7%) since the previous census in 2011. The population of Scotland has been increasing since 2000, and it is projected to peak in 2028 at 5.48 million and thereafter decline to 5.39 million in 2045. In the 2011 Census, 62% of Scotlands population stated their national identity as Scottish only, 18% as Scottish and British, 8% as British only, and 4% chose other identity only.
