The primary goal of Swachh Bharat Mission, also known as Clean India Mission, is to eliminate open defecation and improve solid waste management in India. The program also aims to create Open Defecation Free (ODF) villages and increase awareness of menstrual health management. The mission was launched by the Government of India in 2014 to achieve an open defecation free (ODF) India in five years. The program is based on the concept of rural development of Mahatma Gandhi, which revolved around creating model villages for transforming swaraj (self-rule) into su-raj (good governance). The objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission include improving the quality of life in rural areas through cleanliness and personal hygiene, making India free of open defecation within five years, and eliminating manual scavenging by ensuring door-to-door collection of waste, its segregation, and proper disposal. The program also aims to inculcate modern and scientific techniques for managing municipal solid waste. The mission is aimed at progressing towards target 6.2 of the Sustainable Development Goals Number 6 established by the United Nations in 2015, which aims for adequate and equitable sanitation access for all, especially for women and girls.
