Originally, it was a fans' choice award, recognizing the "people's choice" player of the year, but now it is determined by the judges at the conclusion of the season's regular rounds. Notably, it is named after Norm Provan and Arthur Summons, whose iconic embrace after the 1963 Grand Final has become a symbol of rugby league's spirit. The trophy for the NRL Premiership is also known as the Provan-Summons Trophy.
