The Purge is a concept where laws stop being enforced and people can do whatever they want without consequence. It is a popular film series wherein for one night of the year, people can do whatever they want without the restriction of rules or laws. However, the Purge has never happened in real life as depicted in the movies. There have been rumors of a group of teenagers planning a purge in Louisville, Kentucky, but no crimes were attached to the event. In August 2022, Illinois passed a law called the "SAFE-T" Act, which allows its residents to commit crimes freely. The law has been nicknamed the "purge law" after the 2013 film in which all crime becomes legal for one day. However, the law is not a real-life version of the Purge, and it is not a 12-hour period during which all criminal activity is legal. Rather, it is a controversial law that some believe will see dangerous criminals released onto the streets.
