The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has its roots in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the birth of major nationalist movements among the Jews and among the Arabs, both geared towards attaining sovereignty for their people in the Middle East. The conflict pits Israeli demands for security in what it has long regarded as a hostile region against Palestinian aspirations for a state of their own. The conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced many millions of people and has its roots in a colonial act carried out more than a century ago. The conflict began with the establishment of a "national home" in Palestine for Jewish people, which was opposed by Palestinian Arabs who also claimed the land. The 1947 United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine was never implemented and provoked the 1947–1949 Palestine War. The current Israeli-Palestinian status quo began following Israeli military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza in the 1967 Six-Day War. The key issues at the core of the dispute include a two-state solution, Israeli settlements, the status of Jerusalem, and refugees. The Palestinians rejected the 1947 Partition Plan because it allotted about 56 percent of Palestine to the Jewish state, including most of the fertile coastal region, while the Palestinians owned 94 percent of historic Palestine and comprised 67 percent of its population. The 1948 Nakba, or the ethnic cleansing of Palestine, resulted in the displacement of 750,000 Palestinians. The conflict has been characterized by violence against Israeli civilians and military forces by Palestinian militants, which Israel, along with the United States and the European Union, refer to as terrorism. The motivations behind Palestinian violence against Israeli civilians are many, and not all violent Palestinian groups agree with each other on specifics, but a common motive is the desire to destroy Israel and replace it with a Palestinian Arab state.
