The Red Light District in Amsterdam is a neighborhood known for its prostitution, sex shops, live sex shows, brothels, and strip clubs. It is located in the city center and is the most famous and attractive of the three red-light districts in Amsterdam. The area is also known as "De Wallen" and covers more than 17 alleys and streets, including more than 200 window brothels. Although the area used to be quite notorious and unsafe, it has changed a lot over the past decades and is now considered a safe area with a friendly atmosphere.
The Red Light District is not exclusively about prostitution, and visitors can also find bars, restaurants, the Museum of Prostitution, and the worlds first condom specialty shop. The area is a major attraction in Amsterdam and is usually crowded, especially at night when the atmosphere is lively and the red neon lights illuminate the canals.
It is important to note that although prostitution and pot are legal in Amsterdam, the Red Light District is not an "anything goes" free-for-all place, and there are several things visitors should not do in the area. The district has a lot of serious criminality, exploitation of women, and social distress, according to a former Amsterdam prostitute who is now a city councilor.
