The King in the North, Robb Stark, and his mother, Catelyn Stark, are among the victims of the massacre. The event is orchestrated by Lord Walder Frey, who is angry that Robb broke his oath to marry one of his daughters and instead married Talisa Maegyr. The massacre is a breaking of the ancient custom of guest right, with safety and security in anothers home no longer being considered guaranteed.
