The referendum held in Australia on October 14, 2023, was about recognizing Indigenous people in the constitution and creating an Indigenous body called the Voice to Parliament that can provide advice to the government on Indigenous issues. The referendum failed to receive a majority of votes across the country, falling short with a projected percentage of 55% . As a result, a federal advisory board to parliament including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People will not be enshrined in the constitution. The only territory to return a majority Yes vote was the ACT. The rejection of the proposal is considered a major setback to the countrys reconciliation efforts.
