The President of India is the head of state of the Republic of India. The President is the nominal head of the executive, the first citizen of the country, as well as the supreme commander of the Indian Armed Forces. The President is indirectly elected by an electoral college comprising both houses of the Parliament of India and the legislative assemblies of each of Indias states and territories. The primary duty of the President is to preserve, protect and defend the constitution and the law of India as made part of their oath. The President is the common head of all independent constitutional entities. The President has both legislative and executive powers. Some of the important powers vested in the President include:
Legislative Powers:
- The power to dissolve the Lok Sabha.
- The power to nominate 12 members to the Rajya Sabha who have made extraordinary accomplishments in the fields of science, art, literature, and social service.
- The power to send a bill back to the parliament unless it is a money bill or constitutional amendment bill.
Executive Powers:
- The executive powers of the country are vested with the President of India.
- The parliament can grant additional powers to the President if it deems fit, and these powers can be further delegated by the President to state governors.
- The President appoints the Prime Minister and with his advice the other Ministers of the Union Council of Ministers.
- The President appoints the Governors of States, the Judges of the Supreme Court and the High Courts, the Auditor General of India, and many other high officials, such as the members of Finance Commission, Election commission, Union Public commission, etc..
The President does not exercise executive powers, but acts as the head of the state and is required by the constitution to act on the advice of ministers. The role of the President is more akin to that of the British monarch or monarchs in countries like the Netherlands or Spain: a referee over a parliamentary system where ministers possess the real power[[2]](https://www.bbc.com/news...
