The Shot in the Dark is a game mechanic introduced in Survivor 41. It is a six-sided die that gives castaways a one-in-six chance of immunity in exchange for their vote at tribal council. Each castaway receives this die at the start of their season, and it may only be played once, ultimately losing its power at the final seven (or the final six in Survivor 42) . The player must be eligible to vote to begin with, and the player must have the die in their possession at tribal council. If a player uses the Shot in the Dark and the die lands on the side that grants safety, any votes cast against them will not count. The Shot in the Dark is considered a "Hail Mary" or a last resort for players who feel they are in danger of being voted out. The Shot in the Dark has been used by several contestants in different seasons, but only one player has been safe as a result of using it.
