The silver dome in Masjid Nabawi is located adjacent to the famous green dome in the south-east corner of the mosque. The dome was not always there, and for over 600 years, there was no dome over Masjid al Nabawi. In 1916, under the reign of Saudi King Abdulaziz Al Saud, the dome was replaced with a silver one, which was rebuilt during King Fahad bin Abdul Aziz’s reign and is currently made of 24-karat gold-plated stainless steel. The silver dome is 26 meters in diameter and weighs 160 tons. The green dome, on the other hand, is the most distinctive feature of Masjid al Nabawi and is located over the center of the mosque, where the tomb of Prophet Muhammad and early Islamic leaders Abu Bakr and Umar are located. The green dome was first constructed in 678 AH by Al- Naasir Hasan Ibn Muhammad Qalawoon and was renovated several times throughout history.
