In football, the slot refers to the area between the outer offensive lineman on either side of center and the wide receiver. The slot receiver is a player who lines up in the slot position between the offensive tackle and the wide receiver. This player is often quick and is in a position to catch the football or take a handoff. Slotbacks also occupy the slot but provide additional blocking and running options. The slotback position is a fixture of Canadian football and indoor football where they act as extra receivers. In plays requiring a third wide receiver, a slot receiver may line up in the slot. Slot receivers are also sometimes called “slotbacks,” though this term can be used to refer to any player who lines up in the slot. The slot receiver position is important because it allows offenses to use playmakers in the slot, giving a speed player the ability to go inside or outside.
