The small pocket on jeans, also known as a watch pocket, was originally designed to hold pocket watches. It was first used with the original Levis "waist overalls" jeans in 1890. The pocket was intended as a safe place for men to store their pocket watches, which were commonly worn on chains and kept in their waistcoats. The pocket is located on the right-hand side of the jeans and is usually too small to be useful for modern items like phones or wallets. The pocket is still included on many jeans today as an homage to the original design and to maintain the integrity of the early design. Some people use the pocket to hold small trinkets, coins, bobby pins, or keys. The small pocket is not found on suit pants because suit jackets already have pocket watches, which makes one on the pants superfluous.
